This edition of the Miles LeHane News is dedicated to the Changing Times in which we all find ourselves. While Miles LeHane cannot fix the financial or housing woes, we can make an impact in a one-by-one approach with people who are caught up in employment struggles.

This year has begun with dark clouds of unprecedented change and refocusing. There is virtually nothing in our economy that is not undergoing significant change. Change expected or unexpected, can be very daunting. Organiza- tions will need to reexamine how they have operated and functioned in the past, and perhaps adjust or redefine the mid- or long-range planning. Out of the present economic turmoil will likely come some difficult issues but also new opportunities. Change is the operative word! Much of this is out of our control and puts us and our organizations into first a reactive mode, which then must move to a proactive mode. For over 25 years, the Miles LeHane Companies has been helping organizations and people navigate these changes. Through our core business we have assisted in Career Transitions, Strategic Planning and other HR activities along with Coaching Executives and Change Management programs for Leadership Teams. As a recognized leader in these areas, we would like to re-introduce you to our multiple Service Offerings in the area of Career Transition and Outplacement. We have developed a suite of Services to accommodate various needs of both organizations and the individuals impacted by change. Our approach is both humanistic as well as focused on delivering results for all stakeholders while being cost effective. With our OI Partner network, we can service organizational needs around the globe. As a locally “woman owned” company we are focused on service and human sensitivity to all that surrounds us, but strive to deliver the very best regardless of the program level services chosen. We invite you to review our website (www.mileslehane.com) and feel free to call for a no obligation review of how we may be of service to you. Choosing a quality provider over a large International brand does not necessarily “cost” more, but you want to insure you receive a cost value balance that meets your needs and intentions. Let us customize a cost effective/service oriented approach for your organization if the need arises. An outline of Outplacement Programs follows. Miles LeHane Companies ‘ OI Partners
Responding to Change in a Shrinking Economy While very few of us anticipated the depth and severity of this economic down turn, we must all respond to the new realities. No one is sure as to the indicators that will signal the ‘bottom’ of this unfolding event and just when that will occur. As a leader in your organi- zation you must adapt, prepare and take contingency actions to above all safeguard the future of the organization and its viability. To that end, we at the Miles LeHane Companies are investing in creating additional cost effective programs in our Outplacement Service Offerings that will give you more choices to assist those who are being restructured. Two months ago we announced our newest offering called Eye-Face. Utilizing the capabilities of the internet and broadband, we are able to supply the outplaced candidate with a video camera if needed and Skype software along with support in installation. We have simultaneously equipped a number of our consultants and staff with this capability and developed a consulting format around this technology. This allows a cost effective way to serve individuals who are either local and want to work from home or those who are remote and unable to have convenient access to one of our offices. With this capability we are able to offer all similar services as a traditional basic program, but priced more cost effectively, by eliminating travel and office utilization. In addition, this service can also be added to our traditional programs to provide an enhanced level of communication support. All of this resulting in the candidate having a sense of a far more personal one on one relationship with their counselor. Looking to the immediate future, your feedback to us has included additional areas that we should explore. We are currently working towards a very basic service of offering an internet based self directed video resume program, with and or without consultant support. This would allow an individual to create and post their own resume online with the addition of a video segment to support the resume. This combines a few minutes of the candidate describing him/herself on camera filling half the screen, with prepared summary of brief bullet points cued to the spoken words on the other half of the screen. The resume then can be downloaded by perspective employers. For release this spring is a Coaching model for managers and leaders that will also be internet/skype based. This ability to have face to face visuals along with open conversation is a great combination for coaching on specific items and functional areas. We do not see the elimination of our personal and in person services for upper level and senior management. What we do see is that a new cost effective tiering of services will respond to the economic constraints of today and the future. Miles LeHane sees this new wave of tools as an important addition to its portfolio of services. Within the ePlatforms, a client organization can offer a ‘take it and run’ option to the candidate, or a hybrid whereby Miles LeHane can assist the candidate in these areas. The technology for each is viable and we will be glad to discuss with you the various applications. Please see our service offerings on the side menu. Newsletter Addendum ‘ Program Highlights E-Breakfast gathering focused on Encore Careers: A hot topic in today’s high unemployment discussions is called “Encore Careers.” By definition, this is typically the move from a person’s primary and long-term career endeavors to a shorter term but many times radically different career. On February 24, our E-Breakfast focused on Encore Careers. Several people who are active with Miles LeHane formed a panel to talk about their road to an Encore Career
Each panelist brought his/her own views of building an encore career. The group who gathered was enthusiastically appreciative of the insights presented. Miles LeHane featured on PBS’s Nightly Business Report. As segments on its month-long feature on JOBS, a producer from the PBS Nightly Business Report came to Leesburg to record an on-camera interview with Melanie Miles, COO, and David Ulrich, Director of Marketing. Dave addressed his total ignorance of personal job search preparation when he was caught without a job during the recession of 1990-91. Melanie addressed the tools that can be learned under the tutelage of a career counselor. A few days later, a second segment was produced and aired, this time featuring a current outplacement candidate, Beverly Pierce, who talked about her mental preparation mindfulness meditation. For the better part of February, these half-hour broadcasts were viewable on the NBR website. Unfortunately for those of you who missed the programs, know that we had a good time taking part in them. David Miles goes to Pakistan on a coaching assignment. While Melanie was PBS-ing, David was on a leadership coaching assignment in Pakistan for a US client, and returned with a whole new appreciation of Freedom and how another part of the world that most Americans can’t travel to, lives. His 10-day trip followed fairly closely behind some cosmetic surgery he had as a follow-up to his incredible weight loss last year. His recovery was speedy and the doctors released him for this trip. Just days after his return from Pakistan, David underwent the second round of surgery to tighten the upper leg regions. In a few months he will have round 3 which will remove the excess jowls and neck. For those who knew David during his heavy years, you will scarcely recognize him now. We are all proud of our leader.
