David Miles goes to Pakistan on a coaching assignment
David has had two international trips to Pakistan for leadership and team building coaching assignments. Fortunately he was able to steer clear of the civil unrest encountered there. Despite that unrest, David returned with a whole new appreciation of Freedom and how another part of the world that most Americans can’t travel to, lives. The client has indicated its interest to extend the coaching contract for another 6 months, but with sessions held in less volatile locations.
David Miles travels to India as a People to People Ambassador
As a totally separate adventure, David was invited by the national office of SHRM to travel to India in December as a People to People Ambassador. During that 9 day trip, David, along with a number of other world class scholars, participated in seminars and heard presentations putting “globality” into an entirely different perspective. The Business of Business is more global than ever before.
Annual Complimentary Career Campaign Seminar
On December 21, 2009, we hosted our annual seminar to help recent or soon-to graduate college students—children or relatives of our clients and friends base—better understand the details of conducting a career campaign.. Scott Miles hosted this all day program. Contents included discussions about resume development, networking, interviewing skills and much more.
E-Breakfast
One of the books recommended in the fall 2009 edition of the newsletter is Change It! , co-written by Doug Price. Doug addressed the E-Breakfast group on January 12 about his book and the key elements in being able to Change It!. This is valuable information that follows an actionable change program. As many of you know, Doug was the President of Miles LeHane for several years and is very familiar with our program thrusts. He is now Senior Vice President of Professional Development for the Destination Marketing Association International.
Dr. David C. Miles, Chairman of the Miles LeHane Companies has reinvented himself during 2009 by losing well over 100 pounds and undergoing three surgical procedures to remove excess skin left behind. We are pleased to post a new photograph of David here so those of you who knew him before will appreciate all the more the changes to his appearance and overall health.

E-BREAKFAST EVENT
Date: February 24, 2009
KEEPING IN TOUCH WITH THE CHANGING WORKFORCE
A hot topic in today's high unemployment discussions is called "Encore Careers." By definition, this is typically the move from a person’s primary and long-term career endeavors to a shorter term but many times radically different career. It usually happens in place of a full retirement. In addition, the career area has typically been on the person’s mind as something they "always wished they could do".
Take David Miles, for instance. He had a 25-year Marriott hospitality-focused and HR career, having always had a passion about cars. So 17 years ago, he retired from Marriott and began a consulting career and collecting high-end performance cars. What might be a next Encore Career for him? 1- Be involved with cars (and make some money doing it); 2- maybe sell Marriott Timeshares; or 3- maybe teach at a University level one semester a year for the next 5 or so years. Each of the three choices have been passions of David’s for years. What passions have you quietly thought about over the years?
For many, who are being invited to or forced to retire from their main career, an encore career might become a very viable option. And in the current economy, unplanned career transition can also become a factor in thinking about an encore career.
Therefore, the next E-Breakfast event on February 24, 2009, will be about Encore Careers. Several people who are active with Miles LeHane will form a panel to talk about their road to an Encore Career. Our program will be the same length as always—gathering at 8am for conversation and refreshments, program beginning at 8:30, adjournment no later than 10am. We hope you will be able to join us and our panel:
- Bob Hein, formerly Airbus CFO, now Shenandoah Univ. and Miles LeHane career counseling
- Mary Santulli, former English/drama teacher, then as a corporate consultant in outplacement delivery, sales and as account executive, now with her own consulting practice.

On Pause: A Career Search Perspective
As we continue to focus on the employment issues facing our Nation, we wish to share with you a perspective on changes we are observing in the Career Management consulting industry. In the September 2009 issue of Smart CEO magazine, several corporate executives and human resources consultants were asked a question that appeared in a brief section entitled “Bad Advice.” Even the best-intentioned mentors can lead their protégés astray. What characteristics define a poor mentor?
Jean O’Brien, owner of the O’Brien Group and a senior consultant for Miles LeHane Companies responded: “Poor mentors don’t take the time commitment seriously. If there is a breakdown in the structure of the agreement, or it starts to unravel, it seems difficult to restart it. It is not about policing someone. There should not be a level of anxiety because of unclear goals and boundaries. And some mentors want to do the right thing, but it is not part of their personalities.”
Melanie
Wins Award
At the Annual
Meeting and Awards Dinner
of the Leesburg Downtown
Business Association (LDBA)
on June 13, Melanie Miles
was presented with a “Great
Idea Award” certificate
for suggesting and implementing
promotional signs on all
the businesses found in
the “Exploring Leesburg” book.
The book that documents
much of the historical
district of Leesburg, has
descriptions of the houses
and current photos. Miles LeHane’s
Dave Ulrich, extracted
and enlarged the copy,
took new photographs and
made stand-up signs for
the merchants to display
in their stores. In addition
to sharing the history
of the respective buildings,
the graphic panels have
helped book sales.
Dr.
Miles’ SPHR
Recertification
It was indeed an honor several
years ago when David
was able to announce
that he had earned
the SPHR designation.
But as anyone who
shares that distinction
knows, one must earn
points to maintain
the title, giving
back to the human
resources community
services and energies.
Well, a few weeks
ago, his new collected
activities and point
totals were submitted
to SHRM for evaluation
and the word came
back that his recertification
was approved, and,
get this—a year
ahead of schedule! Way
to go, David! He is
now certified through
2011.
David Miles Quoted in The Washington Post
David Miles was asked back in June by The Washington Post for some thoughts on how better to use the downtime between jobs to help round out a resume or to fill holes in skill sets. Follow this link to the Sunday, July 12, 2009 JOBS section of the Post, where the following article appeared.
The Unpaid Payoff of a Between-Jobs Job

Melanie Miles and Wendy Drury
from Miles LeHane stood on the steps
of the Glenfiddich House and waved a
flag in salute to the many motorcyclists
who rode through Leesburg, Virginia on
August 19th during the 5th annual America’s
9-11 ride event. Said one rider, “I
snapped this picture from the back seat
of the bike. Thank you so much for such
a wonderful welcome. It really made me
proud to live in Leesburg. This welcome
was by far the best we experienced during
the entire ride (over 1100 miles).”
