KEEPING IN TOUCH WITH THE CHANGING WORKFORCE
A hot topic in today's high unemployment discussions is called "Encore Careers." By definition, this is typically the move from a person’s primary and long-term career endeavors to a shorter term but many times radically different career. It usually happens in place of a full retirement. In addition, the career area has typically been on the person’s mind as something they "always wished they could do".
Take David Miles, for instance. He had a 25-year Marriott hospitality-focused and HR career, having always had a passion about cars. So 17 years ago, he retired from Marriott and began a consulting career and collecting high-end performance cars. What might be a next Encore Career for him? 1- Be involved with cars (and make some money doing it); 2- maybe sell Marriott Timeshares; or 3- maybe teach at a University level one semester a year for the next 5 or so years. Each of the three choices have been passions of David’s for years. What passions have you quietly thought about over the years?
For many, who are being invited to or forced to retire from their main career, an encore career might become a very viable option. And in the current economy, unplanned career transition can also become a factor in thinking about an encore career.
Therefore, the next E-Breakfast event on February 24, 2009, will be about Encore Careers. Several people who are active with Miles LeHane will form a panel to talk about their road to an Encore Career. Our program will be the same length as always—gathering at 8am for conversation and refreshments, program beginning at 8:30, adjournment no later than 10am. We hope you will be able to join us and our panel:
- Bob Hein, formerly Airbus CFO, now Shenandoah Univ. and Miles LeHane career counseling
- Mary Santulli, former English/drama teacher, then as a corporate consultant in outplacement delivery, sales and as account executive, now with her own consulting practice.

Commissioner David Miles Speaks Out At Economic Development Meeting
During a recent monthly meeting of the Loudoun County Economic Development Commission, debate and commentary on the increasing crowed roads occupied much of the time. Loudoun Business was there and quoted Miles LeHane Chairman David Miles who is also a Commissioner of the EDC.” Read more.

Melanie Miles and Wendy Drury
from Miles LeHane stood on the steps
of the Glenfiddich House and waved a
flag in salute to the many motorcyclists
who rode through Leesburg, Virginia on
August 19th during the 5th annual America’s
9-11 ride event. Said one rider, “I
snapped this picture from the back seat
of the bike. Thank you so much for such
a wonderful welcome. It really made me
proud to live in Leesburg. This welcome
was by far the best we experienced during
the entire ride (over 1100 miles).”
Table
Arrives
On March
29, 2005, a shiny conference table
was delivered to Miles LeHane's new offices
in "The Stables." The table was
constructed out of a black walnut tree
that had been growing on the Miles's
Glenfiddich property for many, many years.
We invite you to visit our link, "Out
of a Spreading Walnut Tree, a Gorgeous
Table Grew", to read a fun little
story about the table and to see
a number of pictures recounting
its delivery.

Miles Shares Panel on Women’s Leadership
The Pennsylvania State University’s College of Health and Human Development sponsored a three-day workshop April 1-3, 2006 as part of its ongoing Women’s Leadership Initiative program. This workshop was held on the campus of Gallaudet University in Washington, DC and focused on “The Next Generation.”
One event early Sunday morning was a panel discussion entitled “Men’s Perspective on Women’s Leadership” featuring Dr. David C. Miles, Chairman of The Miles LeHane Companies - OI Partners; Craig Chanoff, Vice President of Client Services, Blackboard, Inc.; and Mike Cronin, Operations, Planning and Program Development Executive, Border Management and Counterterrorism. Questions they addressed were drawn from several broad topic areas:
- Gender differences in the workplace
- Career advice
- Personal life
- Working with/under female leaders
The audience very much appreciated the reality, candor, integrity and humor the panel brought to the topics focused to young women leaders and their mentors.
The mission of The Women’s Leadership Initiative is clear: empowerment at every level. The WLI educates, inspires and empowers the next generation of female leaders with the core values, attitudes and skills that are the foundation of quality leadership. The female students from Penn State participate in a 12-month interdisciplinary extracurricular program that includes weekend workshops, monthly seminars, externships, and readings, lectures and discussions about leadership. Finally, students complete an applied leadership project.

GLENFIDDICH FORUM FOR WOMEN
SPRING MEEETING - 2009
Wednesday, April 8, 2009
4 to 5 p.m. – Networking
5 to 6 p.m. – Presentation
6 to 7p.m. – Networking & Dinner
Glenfiddich House
205 N. King Street
Leesburg, VA 20176
The Women’s Forum was initiated in June 2002 as a networking vehicle for professional women. It has worked well in that regard. Now with the added employment challenges facing us all, networking takes on even more importance.
Our next gathering of the Forum, on April 8, 2009, will feature for her second presentation to the group, Lynne Waymon, CEO of Contacts Count, the nationwide training and consulting firm that specializes in helping people put the tools of networking to work in the service of business goals. She’s a nationally recognized expert on business and professional networking and the co-author of Make Your Contacts Count(2007, NY, American Management Association). In keynotes and workshops she gives professionals in corporate, government, association, university, and non-profit audiences, practical strategies for getting things done through networking, negotiating, and alliance building. Her strategies, in print and in person, are recognized nationwide as state-of-the-art.
Lynne will focus on “Making Your Contacts Count: What's New About Networking”, pointing out that fewer than 15% of the people surveyed by her organization have the network they need to accomplish their goals. Yet anyone can gain the skills to create the network they need. Your confidence and competence with these skills will help you succeed in the marketplace for years to come.
Lynne will share the latest rules and tools for creating, cultivating, and capitalizing on networking relationships and opportunities in a variety of business, professional, and social settings. Among these will be:
- Master the 3 key moments in every relationship
- Remember names — and teach them yours
- Answer "What do you do?" in a way that shows your character & competence
- Develop a “big picture” network that sends you timely information
- Know what to do and say in a variety of professional situations
- End conversations with the future in mind
We hope you will join us for this very interesting presentation and discussion. We will be presenting each attendee with a personally signed copy of Lynne’s book.
RSVP by Wednesday, April 1st (seating is limited – 40 maximum) to Melanie Miles (owner and principal) or Wendy at 703-777-3370, or email: feedback@mileslehane.com. And please remember that we need regrets as well as acceptances due to the number of people who want to come hear our Forum speakers.
We look forward to seeing you on April 8th.
Melanie
Wins Award
At the Annual
Meeting and Awards Dinner
of the Leesburg Downtown
Business Association (LDBA)
on June 13, Melanie Miles
was presented with a “Great
Idea Award” certificate
for suggesting and implementing
promotional signs on all
the businesses found in
the “Exploring Leesburg” book.
The book that documents
much of the historical
district of Leesburg, has
descriptions of the houses
and current photos. Miles LeHane’s
Dave Ulrich, extracted
and enlarged the copy,
took new photographs and
made stand-up signs for
the merchants to display
in their stores. In addition
to sharing the history
of the respective buildings,
the graphic panels have
helped book sales.
David Miles in Community
Service
The Town of Leesburg operates a weekly
free health clinic
for the town's disadvantaged.
Doctors and nurses
donate their professional
services to help these
people in need. Using
his culinary skills,
once a month David
Miles prepares a hot
meal for the volunteering
doctors and nurses
to help out in this
community activity.
Leesburg Oldtimers Share
Memories
With there being such a
sense of history in
and around Leesburg,
and with Miles LeHane's
offices in the Glenfiddich
House, one of the
most magnificent of
the extant antebellum
mansions, we set out
to gather recollections
from a number of Leesburg's
seniors who had spent
all or most of their
lives in this Town.
With tape recorder
in hand, Dave Ulrich,
marketing director
for Miles LeHane has
spoken to a number
of life-long residents,
hearing about growing
up in the Depression,
swimming in the town's
creeks and branches,
and being witness
to the gatherings
downtown on Friday
nights when the farmers
came to town for shopping
and socializing. These
transcribed interviews
have become part of
the Glenfiddich memorabilia
collection.
David
Miles Honored at Annual
Conference
On
Saturday, April
16, 2005, Dr. David C.
Miles, SPHR,
CMP, was honored at the
2005 Association
of Career Professionals
International
(ACP) annual conference
in Chicago during
the Gala Dinner and Reception.
The lifetime
Fellow Practitioner designation
was presented
by the Institute of Career Certification
International, the certifying
arm of ACP, and given “in
recognition of
professional achievement, of
a commitment to advancing
the Career Management
Profession and
to abiding by its ethical
standards, and
of a demonstration of
competency in
the five areas required
of outstanding
Career Management Professionals.”
David’s
membership in ACP International
traces back to the mid
1990’s, when his
professional credentials
enabled him to be ushered
into the organization as
a Charter Fellow. Since
that time he has grown
his business, The Miles LeHane
Companies - OI Partners, to be one of the
key independent career
management consulting companies
in the country, as well
as in 2002 completing his
Doctorate of Education
(EdD) in Human Resources
Development at The George
Washington University.
Dr.
Miles’ SPHR
Recertification
It was indeed an honor a couple of
years ago when David
was able to announce
that he had earned
the SPHR designation.
But as anyone who
shares that distinction
knows, one must earn
points to maintain
the title, giving
back to the human
resources community
services and energies.
Well, a few weeks
ago, his new collected
activities and point
totals were submitted
to SHRM for evaluation
and the word came
back that his recertification
was approved, and,
get this—a year
ahead of schedule! Way
to go, David! He is
now certified through
2011.
The
Miles LeHane Companies - OI Partners has been featured in several leading
