Interviewing: A Skill too Few Have, but too Many Practice
One of the major issues facing organizations in today’s economy is the recruiting and retention of top performers. Several of the Miles LeHane services help address this issue from several directions. These would include coaching of existing employees, Strategic Design for Staffing and Effective Interviewing Techniques.
Interviews are conducted by both parties—the interviewer and the interviewee. Most professionals seeking their next position have never learned how to conduct a successful interview. Similarly, it is not unusual to find that most of the professionals involved in the hiring process have not been trained to manage an effective interview. This is a worst case scenario; both participating parties assume they know how to manage a process that is critical to their future success.
Most companies will put candidates through several interviews to select the one best suited to the position. These may include: screening interviews, group interviews, interviews by various HR staff, peers, technical experts, the hiring manager and upper management. Typically, several of these people involved in the decision making process have little or no formal training in the process. They make their recommendation based on intuition or gut feel – it’s said that we make an emotional decision in less than a minute and then spend the rest of our time rationalizing that decision.
Miles LeHane offers customized training for all of your staff involved in interviewing. Effective interviewing will provide measurable improvement through:
- Higher acceptance rate by candidates who are offered position
- More successful assimilation
- Decreased turnover of new associates
Major topics covered in the training include:
- Basic principle of interviewing
- Defining key success criteria
- Structuring the interview
- Conducting the interview
- Legal issues
- Videotaped practice sessions.

Miles LeHane Brings Its Programs to Boiling
SUGGESTED READING
212˚ – The extra degree
by Sam Parker and Mac Anderson
Published by Simple Truths, Aurora, IL
Picture this metaphor: Water—at 211 degrees it is hot. At 212 degrees, it boils. When water boils, it produces steam. And steam can power a train.
The beautifully uncomplicated metaphor has application to practically everything we do, or don’t do in our lives. Carry over this metaphor to our lives. That one extra degree can push us to make the extra effort in every task, action and assignment we undertake—whether in our personal or professional lives. 212˚ can motivate us, it can focus us, it can remind us that seemingly small things can make a tremendous difference.
This is a paraphrase of the authors setting the stage for this important look into our self-motivation. According to the authors, this book helps us internally define and take ownership of the most fundamental principle behind achieving life results beyond our expectations – a simple idea with a singular focus – and actionable focus.
So important is the message of this little book that Miles LeHane has begun incorporating its precepts into our candidate interface sessions.
Learning Curve Highly Successful
Miles LeHane’s Dr. David Miles put on a different hat this spring and made a run at a seat on the Leesburg Town Council. Having adopted a low profile over the years in Leesburg, he knew he had to become visible and make his positions known in a short period of time. The council of six, plus the mayor’s seat, was vacating three seats. Nine men entered the race, while the incumbent mayor ran unopposed.
On May 2, the votes were cast, and David’s candidacy did not prevail. But he said afterward that he did gain needed visibility and recognition of his positions. He learned a great deal about town politics and plans to stay involved in the process. In two years there will be another election for which he will be much better prepared.

GLENFIDDICH FORUM FOR WOMEN
FALL MEETING – Wednesday, October 25, 2006
Networking 4 to 5 p.m
Presentation 5 to 6 p.m.
Dinner 6 to 7 p.m.
205 N. King Street -- Leesburg, VA 20176
The Glenfiddich Forum for Women will have a very special treat at its October 25, 2006 gathering. Our speaker for that day will be Dr. Kathleen Saylor, CEO – Rehau North America. Dr. Saylor becomes the first female CEO of the German-owned company, and the first CEO not a member of the company’s founding Wagner family. Prior to this significant promotion, Kitty was Vice President of Human Resources, having started with Rehau in 1994 as a training and organizational development specialist.
There are several sides to this story that make Kitty’s visit to the Women’s Forum very special. The most obvious may be that a human resources executive was elevated to the top spot. It is not often that an executive out of the revenue-producing stream is given such responsibility. And in parallel to that, Kitty’s career path has stayed well outside the usual track for such a journey.
Perhaps it is her style that sets her apart. In her words: “I’ve learned to listen and not assume that one way is the correct way. There are many different ways to manage and lead people. The key is taking the time to understand the different approaches. Once you understand them it’s actually not so difficult.”
We can look forward to Kitty sharing her story with us. We hope you will join us for this important presentation and discussion that follows.

Dutch Intern Writes Senior Thesis at Glenfiddich
Between February 24, 2006 and May 24, 2006, the Miles LeHane staff and the halls of Glenfiddich were livened up by the presence of Hanna Maijer, a university student from The Netherlands. She came to Leesburg to work with David Miles on her Senior Thesis in Human Resources Management. Through David’s contacts at Penn State University, Hanna was able to focus on the Women’s Leadership Initiative program, and offer insight into the mechanism for selecting undergraduate women for this program.
Hanna has now returned to her home and graduated from university, ready now to pursue a career in human resources management. This delightful young woman was a joy to have in our presence, and though she is missed, we have fond memories of her buoyant personality and sweet disposition. Our personal thanks to all our friends and associates who participated in her thesis research and preparation, and befriended and entertained her throughout her stay.
