Thoughts
on Change: Insights
for Ourselves
As Chairman of the Company, one of
the areas I enjoy
is to attend presentations
by learned individuals
in a variety of fields.
The following excerpt is from a presentation
by Dr. Travis Sample
to the Loudoun Chapter
of the Society for
Human Resources Management
(SHRM) meeting. I thought you might find
it of interest. His
8 principles are
encompassed in our
Coaching models (see
Miles LeHane News,
Spring 2005). --DCM

In an era of increasing societal
turbulence and an apparent
and alarming insensitivity
to the critical and foundational
aspects underlying how we
must embrace and celebrate
change in our lives; as well
as in organizations today,
we continue to struggle with
balancing the view of accepting
greater demands upon us with
the need to focus upon what
truly gives our lives meaning,
purpose, and relevance. As
a passionately committed
organizational “change
agent,” Dr. Sample
reflects the belief that
organizations cannot be transformed
and effectively process accelerating
change until and unless each
of us commit ourselves to
personal transformation and
servant leadership; anchored
in a deep belief in the innate
power of embracing a life
of integrity, ethical conduct,
trustworthiness, unconditional
trust, an appetite for accountability
in all of life’s choices
and both personal and organizational
alignment; and demanding
these qualities from … and
in whom …we interact.
Exploring “Humanizing
Change”, Dr. Sample
will both inspire and provoke
you to create your own legacy,
your own destiny, your future,
while discovering an inner
strength, an ethical anchor
that will guide you as you
pursue and achieve greatness
in your life.
With respect to his Humanizing
Change: A Journey of Discovery
published book (University
Press of America, Lanham,
Maryland, November, 2002,
ISBN #0-7618-2429-4), Dr.
Sample speaks to his Eight
Principles which, if discovered/
operationalized, will potentially
become life changing.
His research is designed to
help leaders, and ALL are
leaders, truly increase their
sense of power and influence
in organizations today; providing
a roadmap to understand how
you might chose to relate
to and embrace the three
constants in life: change,
choice and the consequences
of those choices. Humanizing
change is not the latest
fad, prescription of the
month, or the most recent “hot
ticket” to come along
as we struggle in our daily
lives and in our professional
pursuits. However, we instinctively
know this approach already.
We know it in our hearts,
but we don’t live it.
Dr. Sample’s Principles
are sequential in nature.
Unless you get the first
down, you’re going
to struggle, for it is the
mother of all principles.
You get that one right … and
the rest are “a piece
of cake” (or at least
3 Oreo cookies). Enjoy.
1) Know What Your Life Is About:
Explore why we must choose
to discover or recover our
inner core, what our life
is about and what is truly
important … what brings
meaning, relevance and purpose
to each of us, for the purpose
of life is to live a life
of purpose.
2) Find Something You Love
to Do and You Will Never
Work Again: This central
idea captures the essence
of our live on this earth
and how we choose to live
it, in quiet desperation
or with true honor, fulfillment
and service to others.
3) Embrace Servant Leadership:
Servant … “interdependent: … leadership
advances the greater good
and is the operative paradigm
for true effectiveness today.
4) Freely Give Power Away:
Power is not unlike love.
The more you give away, the
more you receive in return,
even when one does not feel
worthy.
5) Prioritize Your Life: Explore
your priorities. Don’t
allow the less important
urgencies to dominate. Recognize
the things in your life that,
while not urgent, are truly
important, and when one thinks
about it, they are virtually
always relationships.
6) Embrace Mutual Trust, Responsibility,
and Accountability: Recognize
the power of choice, acknowledging
that we simply are, in all
our uniqueness, one with
all, sharing the same fate.
7) Value and Celebrate Differences:
Learn to pursue, value and
celebrate diversity rather
than choosing to fear differences
or relying on “sameness” or
similarities, which clearly
weaken us all.
8) Acquire an Appetite for
Personal Mastery: Knowledge
is not enough, for knowledge
does not equal behavior,
and telling does not equal
doing. One must become before
we do.

Wins Award
At the
Annual Meeting and Awards
Dinner of the Leesburg Downtown
Business Association (LDBA)
on June 13, Melanie Miles
was presented with a “Great
Idea Award” certificate
for suggesting and implementing
promotional signs on all
the businesses found in the “Exploring
Leesburg” book. The
book that documents much
of the historical district
of Leesburg, has descriptions
of the houses and current
photos. Miles LeHane’s
Dave Ulrich, extracted and
enlarged the copy, took new
photographs and made stand-up
signs for the merchants to
display in their stores.
In addition to sharing the
history of the respective
buildings, the graphic panels
have helped book sales.
David Miles thanks all the
well-wishers who offered
their condolences on the
passing of his father June
16, 2005. Harold Miles was
90.

Johnston to
Head Cornerstone Division
Effective June 16, 2005, James “BJ” Johnston
began with Miles LeHane as President, Cornerstone Division
for Products and Services, announced Dr. David C. Miles,
Miles LeHane’s Chairman. BJ joins us out of a
background that includes telecom account management,
performance improvement consulting, international sales
training and organizational development.
As President of the Cornerstone organization, BJ will
be marketing and coordinating product and service delivery
that includes human resource support services, personality
profiles and assessments and training programs such
as “Prevention of Sexual Harassment” and “Prevention
of Workplace Violence.”
In addition, David Miles will continue to be the primary
coordinator for executive coaching. This segment of
our services has been placed under Cornerstone due
to ongoing expansion of our core Outplacement services
and the desire to separate Executive Coaching services
from under the Miles LeHane Companies operating banner.
We all look forward to getting to know BJ over the
coming weeks.
Jamie Heads Off to College
For much of the past year, Miles LeHane has been pleased
to have had Jamie Kapalka working with us part time
in the capacity of Administrative Intern. After her
daily school obligations ended, a couple of times a
week, Jamie would help with the late afternoon phone
coverage, collating a wide range of materials to be
shipped somewhere, and helping Melanie hostess various
events taking place in the late afternoon.
Come Fall, Jamie will ascend the next rung in her life’s
ladder by heading off to college—specifically,
Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia . As her
plan develops she will study pre-law with the intent
of continuing on to law school following the receipt
of her baccalaureate degree.
As part of closing out of her high school career, Jamie
graduates with High Honors as special recognition for
her efforts in the drama program, where she directed
several student productions, acted in several others
and stage managed the first ever production at Heritage
High School in her sophomore year. All this and more
won her special praise from the faculty.
We will miss Jamie, and wish her all the best in her
future pursuits.
Consultant Joins MLG
One of the newer consultants working with Miles LeHane
for the past year has been Jean O’Brien. She
handles assignments both in executive coaching and
career outplacement.
Residing in Annandale, Virginia, Jean started The O’Brien
Group in 2000 after working twenty years in international
Human Resources management. She continues her work
to enhance the business community with individuals
who, as well as fulfilling their career talents as
competent representatives of their corporations, are
also self-confident and polished professionals.
Mentoring young professionals has been an important
role in her career, so presenting table etiquette,
communication skills and social behavior to children
and teenagers is a natural connection. Building self-confidence
at an early age forms a basis for well-rounded individuals
in careers, as leaders and successful family members.
Jean continues her etiquette training to the home,
combining duties as host/hostess and guests, table
setting and social manners as we entertain Presidents
and friends.
Jean holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Pennsylvania
State University, Certification for Professional in
Human Resources from American University and Certification
as an Etiquette Consultant for corporate cultures and
social situations. She is also certified as an interpreter
of Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).
