Carriage House Receives Architectural Excellence Award
In
each of the past several newsletters, we've given progress
updates on the construction of David and Melanie Miles'
Carriage House, being constructed on the Wirt Street side
of the Glenfiddich property. In late Fall, they took occupancy
and settled in during the Christmas break. As the punch
list was whittled down to nothing, the Miles were more than
pleased with the outcome.
The rooms, though
few in number, are spacious and beautifully appointed, from
the selection of the windows and doors, wide board flooring,
three fireplaces, wainscoting and a large custom-made crown
molding at the juncture of the nine foot ceilings. Master
bedroom and guest room on the second floor, the first floor
having the living and dining rooms and the chef's kitchen
all open, and on the lower level David's office and a second
office/conference room.
A surprise was
in store for the Miles-one that surfaced in early May of
this year. The Leesburg Board of Architectural Review had
nominated this house for an Architectural Excellence Award
for construction in the Historic District of Leesburg, Virginia.
As part of the annual Historic Preservation Week, the Town
selected the Miles' Carriage House for the award.
Those familiar
with Leesburg and its Historic District Board of Architectural
Review know that this Board has always taken its responsibility
very seriously-to protect and maintain the historic relevance
of Leesburg. To be so honored with the Architectural Excellence
Award is an accomplishment indeed.
One interesting
sidebar to the construction process leading up to the award.
When the architect first presented his concept to the Miles,
they accepted it on the spot with very minor changes. Further,
when the revised design was submitted to the Town of Leesburg
and the Board of Architectural Review, the submission was
so complete and the design so true to the spirit, as well
as the letter of construction covenants in the Historic
District, that the design was approved without discussion
or change-indeed a tribute to the Miles and their architect.

Women Executive Seminar
On June 13th, Miles LeHane
sponsored and hosted the first in a new series of seminars
for women executives. The program, entitled "Women Executives:
Building Influence and Networks," was attended by 40 women
executives from across the Washington Metropolitan Area and
Pennsylvania. Dr. Cynthia Smith, a counseling psychologist
and a senior consultant for Miles LeHane, gave the overview
presentation. She explored coaching themes of women executives,
including leadership competence, connecting, career development,
and building influence and networks.
With this presentation
setting the stage, Pat Adams, also a MLG consultant and former
VP of Human Resources at Marriott Corporation facilitated
a panel, consisting of Dr. Sara Parks, Director of the School
of HRRM at Penn State University; Kimberly Gavaletz, Corporate
Audit Vice President with Lockheed Martin; and Ann Denison,
Vice President and Director of Human resources with SRA. Panelists
shared the purpose, benefits and insights derived from coordinating
women's networks. Emphasis was on the role these networks
play in supporting the growth and success of the organization
and the participants.
The second in this
new series will be presented on October 23 and is entitled
"Leading Change: Maximizing Personal and Organization Resilience."
David Miles will share research from his doctoral dissertation
and give insight into the attitudes and behaviors of exceptionally
resilient women executives. David's research will be followed
by a workshop designed to strengthen your ability to lead
and respond to change. Stay tuned.
Consultants Operate Parallel
Businesses
Miles LeHane consultants
are very seasoned and experienced professionals who bring
a broad collective background to our career management and
human resources consulting business. Two of our consultants
have interesting businesses of their own that in several ways
compliment the Miles LeHane programs.
Gayle Young-Monroe
operates Positive Organizations, Inc, her consulting business
that focuses on organizational problem solving, change management,
team building and motivation, training and course development.
These are good companion areas to Miles LeHane's program offerings
that deal with individuals, while Gayle concentrates on the
organization.
Dixie Sanner provides
outplacement counseling for Miles LeHane. Her business, called
Sanner Organizing Solutions, a.k.a. " S.O.S.", helps individuals
better manage their time, loose paper and files, making them
more productive and less stressed.

MLG Provides
Guest Speakers
In early May,
David Miles was busy as usual, but found time to work in two
presentations. The first was to TAG, a network group of CEOs,
on the subject of Organizational Restructuring and the impact
that can have on the personnel in the organization from the
top executives down through the ranks. Later in the month,
David spoke to the Winchester, Virginia chapter of SHRM, expanding
the earlier theme to include the pitfalls that many HR professionals
must deal with in times of restructuring. Most recently he
returned from a trip to Paris, France participating in a group
on international career management issues.
Doug Price is also
busy on the speaking circuit traveling to Wisconsin, Michigan,
California, Texas and Missouri to give presentations on being
"Licensed to Sell" and Change Management.
David and Doug recently
appeared on ABC's "Business Now" program commenting on the
condition of the labor market post 9-11. They are available
to speak and would be delighted to come before your group
to share their ideas on a broad range of topics. Some subjects
include Leadership, Coaching, the Economy and Its Affects
on Organizational Restructuring, How DiSC can improve
communications between managers, Preventing Sexual
Harassment in the Workplace and Preventing Workplace
Violence. (These last two are designed as online employee
training and fulfill requirements of mandated EEOC
awareness training.) These are but a few topic ideas. We invite
you to call David or Doug to discuss your group's needs. Perhaps
they can help.
