Executive
Coaching: A Business Focus for the Decade
The
most potent influence on reaching business
objectives is the day-to-day behavior
of the key executives and leaders throughout
the organization.
The
lessons of the 1980’s, 1990’s
and more recently, clearly taught
us that despite all efforts to cut
costs, reengineer, acquire and merge,
nothing correlates to business success
so much as the quality of leadership.
Continued globalization of customers,
consumers, clients, suppliers and
employees requires new and enhanced
approaches to meet and exceed market
demands. As competition raises the
bar on expectations, an organization’s
leadership team must be able to
respond effectively to that challenge.
The
Miles LeHane Group has established
a strong track record of successful
coaching relationships. The
costs of finding and replacing key
people are considerable. As a result,
businesses are investing in executive
development rather than replacement.
Our typical clients are CEO’s,
heads of major business functions,
senior executives and high potential
executives. Additionally, we provide
focused coaching support for the
unique issues of women, minority
and culturally diverse executives.
In fact, each coaching approach
is customized and balanced to focus
on the mutually “contracted” success
objectives.
Selecting
the Right Coaching Firm
Our
coaches include highly trained business
professionals and career development
psychologists who have a history
of successfully impacting leadership
effectiveness.
Coaching
assignments are based on the needs
and situation of the individual
and the experience and expertise
of the coach. Specifically, coaches
help executives assess their
effectiveness, obtain confidential
feedback on individual strengths
and weaknesses and learn new behaviors
and skills. The key to our approach
is not simply implementing a program,
but developing a customized process
focused on meeting stakeholder’s
needs. The approaches that we utilize
are based on sound principles of
business, plus adult learning theory
for sustainable success.
The process starts
with Learning about the organization:
The
process then continues
with Learning about the executive:
- Prior and current
successes
and opportunities
- Key
stakeholder
perceptions
- Criteria
for future success
- Keys
to success
With
these building
blocks in place,
our coaches
use a guided
process for
defining the
participant’s
goals and objectives;
understanding
and assessing
values, needs
and leadership
style; obtaining
confidential
feedback from
those with whom
the participant
interacts professionally;
establishing
an action plan
he/she is motivated
to follow; and
based on the
gap analysis,
progressing
toward maximizing
sustainable
leadership effectiveness.
Process Tools for the Customized Approach
There is a broad array of process tools
readily available to the coach.
Selection is customized to individual
needs, and may include:
- Interviews
- Multi-rater
feedback - 360˚
- Technology support applications
- Stakeholder input
- Psychological profiling
- Reflective feedback sessions
- Self-esteem/career management planning
- Short-term goal development
- Long-term goal development
- Personal action planning
- Stakeholder action plans
- Commitment to ongoing leadership development
- Review and ongoing support
In
addition, coaches determine and
discuss with participants which
specific inventories, conceptual
models, feedback mechanisms, and
books/readings will have the most
impact on them.
Coaching Models
To
provide the best services
for the stated objectives, we
offer three major models of coaching:
- Coaching for Leadership—Focus
on
leadership
support
at
the
top.
- Coaching for Development
and Success—Focus
on current and future
assignments and opportunities.
- Coaching for Performance—Focus
on
enhancement
for current
or
future
challenges.
Implementation
These models
are applied to the particular
coaching situation that can
be conducted as 1) individual
face-to-face, one-on-one
sessions, 2) in small group
sessions, and 3) our newest
coaching format, one-on-one
telephone coaching sessions
that deal with more personalized
day to day business issues.
Miles
LeHane’s
Executive Coaching services are designed
to enhance an individual’s contributions
to the stakeholders objectives. By
focusing on the “Dimensions of
Leadership,” we
customize
and implement
an Executive
Coaching process
aimed at individual
and organizational
objectives.
The Dimensions
of Leadership
model in the box below helps
participants understand that
they need to think beyond
technical competencies as
the primary criteria of determining
leadership effectiveness.

As
the Dimensions of Leadership
poses a model, and in
particular the Leadership
quadrant, a vital element
is in the sharpening
or development of the
process called “Critical
Thinking.” Academically
defined, “thinking” is
a conscious mental process
performed to solve a problem,
make a decision, or gain
understanding. The essence
of “critical thinking” is evaluation,
so it may, therefore,
be defined as the
process by which
we test claims
and arguments and
determine which
have merit and
which do not. Put
another way, “critical
thinking” is
a search for answers,
a quest.
So to develop the tools to
perform as a critical thinker,
a leader much learn to ask
probing questions to challenge
ideas, and employ questions
to analyze issues. These
options need to be tested
against current and future
issues impacting long-term
success.
And
herein lies the
essence of Miles
LeHane’s
inclusion of Critical
Thinking into Leadership
coaching. Working
with the executives,
our coaches delve
into the areas
of questioning
and analysis. By
understanding how
the individual
views reality,
how they function
as a leader, and
how they process
current and future
views of the business
environment, we
can help them broaden
their perspective
by developing skills
in the areas of
critical thinking
and strategic thinking.
Miles
LeHane stands ready to work
with you or your company
executives to develop a coaching
program that can advance
the quality and performance
of your organization’s
leadership. We sincerely
hope you will contact us
with any questions.

Dr.
Miles’ SPHR
Recertification
It was indeed an honor a couple of years ago when David
was able to announce that he had earned the SPHR designation.
But as anyone who shares that distinction knows, one
must earn points to maintain the title, giving back
to the human resources community services and energies.
Well, a few weeks ago, his new collected activities
and point totals were submitted to SHRM for evaluation
and the word came back that his recertification was
approved, and, get this—a year ahead of schedule!
Way to go, David! He is now certified through 2008.
Women’s
Forum to Explore Humor and Health
The Glenfiddich Forum for Women will take
a look at stress in the work place – or rather,
stress management – when we gather for our Spring
2005 Women Executive Networking meeting on Wednesday,
April 20, from 4-7PM (Refreshments served).
The topic is about Humor and Health: A Lesson
in Laughter. We will learn how laughter can
enhance one’s health.
Research shows that laughter can raise
pain thresholds, reduce stress and even boost immune-system
function. This program uses humor and the human experience
to teach stress management. The content focuses on laughter
and behaviors designed to get us through day to day life
with fewer mental bruises.
Our speaker for this fun-filled and informative
session will be Lois Walden, RN, BSN, from Frederick
Memorial Healthcare System Wellness Center, in Frederick,
Maryland.
We hope you will join us as Lois brings
her national reputation as a public speaker to our
Forum. For over 20 years she has been involved in the
nursing, fitness and education field.

Shepherding
the Coaches Insight
We are pleased to announce that we have a new coaching
candidate at the Glenfiddich house. His name is Max,
the newest member of the Miles LeHane team – a
soon-to-be 3 year old German Shepherd—all hundred
pounds of him. Melanie and David rescued him last
summer and is very much a work-in-progress going
through the rigors of coaching and counseling—MLG
style. As a young adult, he continues to demonstrate
The Attitude, and believes that he has all the right
answers. His profiling indicates the prognosis for
a successful venture, but right now is being administered
the “short leash” program. Coach Melanie
asks for your best wishes.
