Women’s
Center Honors MLG Owner
On
Saturday, March 8, Melanie Miles attended the 18th Annual
Leadership Conference sponsored by the Women’s Center.
The program, entitled “Advancing the Agenda,”
showcased women leaders and celebrated their remarkable
progress and explored opportunities for the future.
Melanie
has been active with the Women’s Center since 1987—before
she and David began their present consulting business. Of
particular note during the conference was Melanie being
named a charter member of the Executive Circle, a group
of executives of women-owned businesses in the Washington
Metropolitan Area. The Women’s Center offered its
deep appreciation to these women who have offered their
generous support to the Center’s mission. Learn more
about the Women’s Center at their website: www.thewomenscenter.org.
Interviewing
Skills Paramount
We
all know that the job market today is extremely competitive.
For every publicized job opening there will be many qualified
candidates. Of course, the key to getting in the door is
having a powerful resume loaded with career accomplishments.
But once in and about to interview, you have just “one
chance to make that first good impression,” as the
saying goes.
Prepare
yourself—on the company, on the position, on your
fit, on expanding your accomplishments when asked, and on
anticipating questions that could throw you off balance.
Spend time practice interviewing with a friend, counselor
or video tape system. The best career history and resume
are for naught if they can’t be carried through the
interview.

David
Adds Another Acronym
That
David Miles received his doctorate last summer is now old
news to most of our readers. Dr. Miles is enjoying his “EdD”
achievement. In December, he added another prestigious acronym.
He took the test for and earned the SPHR (Senior Professional
in Human Resources) designation. In addition, David will
be a speaker at the VASHRM (Virginia SHRM state conference)
in October 2003.

Destination
Selling Program Expands
For
several years, MLG president Doug Price has been teaching
a sales training course based on his book, License to Sell.
Several times a year, he has presented to members of IACVB,
the International Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus.
Called “Destination Selling,” this course has
been a primer on how to attract meetings and conventions to
individual destinations.
That
program has been so successful that Doug was asked to prepare
a follow-up course. “Destination Selling II” had
its roll out in February and provides much greater depth on
the skills needed to sell a destination. The first course,
now called “Destination Selling I,” is still offered
with the same frequency and being taught by Mike Lupfer, a
long-time sales training consultant to Miles LeHane.
