Dr. David Miles to Present "Critical Thinking" at Virginia State SHRM Conference

On October 4, 2007, Dr. David C. Miles, Chairman of the Miles LeHane Companies,  will present to the Virginia State SHRM Conference his thoughts on “Critical Thinking: The Key to Competency”.  If you are planning to attend the conference, mark you calendars. David’s remarks may change your viewpoint on what makes an effective decision maker.  Along the traditional spectrum of accepted models are Generalist and Specialist. Now there is a third model—Versatilist. This person is The Critical Thinker and has the ability to accomplish tasks, work with and through others, judge oneself,  and adapt behaviors.

Complex new situations cannot be any longer solved by looking for a suitable paradigm, David will argue. Rather, our Critical Thinker will approach the problem organically, being adaptive, self-evolving and using cognitive skills to solve the problems of today’s business environment.  Learning to think critically is one of the most significant activities of the new leader. We must develop an awareness of the assumptions under which we think and act and bring in the team and others for their ideas.

David will describe the key focus areas of Critical Thinking:

  1. Understanding the phenomenon—the essential components.
  2. Exploring various methods, techniques, and approaches.
  3. Becoming critical thinkers in relationships, at work, in politics, and with the media.

The primary goal that David has set for his presentation is for those attending to begin to be able to recognize and facilitate Critical Thinking in their everyday work environments.

  • It is a productive and positive activity.
  • It is a process, not an outcome.
  • Its manifestations vary to context and the person.
  • It is triggered by positive or negative events.
  • It is emotive as well as rational.

Join David for his October 4, 2007 SHRM presentation scheduled from 7 a.m. to 8:15 a.m.  It is a dreadful hour, but his remarks will wake you up.

Miles LeHane and OI Partners will be staffing a booth at the Virginia State SHRM Conference. Stop by Booth 106 in the exhibit hall to chat with Melanie Miles and Dave Ulrich about ways that we might be able to help you and your organization.

GLENFIDDICH FORUM FOR WOMEN
FALL MEETING – Wednesday, October 17, 2007
Networking 4 to 5 p.m.
Presentation 5 to 6 p.m.
Dinner 6 to 7 p.m.
205 N. King Street – Leesburg, VA 20176

During the several years we have been sponsoring the Glenfiddich Forum for Women, we have been able to present to our loyal following a series of women speakers who have covered a wide swath of business endeavors: education, women’s leadership, motivational speaking, novelist, to name but a few. Our gathering on October 17 will add another category to our growing list—entrepreneur. We are pleased that Kristina Bouweiri, CEO of Reston Limousine Service, Inc. in Sterling, Virginia, will share her story about being a woman in a male-dominated industry, who has risen to the top with a lot of hard work, astute business smarts, and a few lucky breaks.

Following her degree in international affairs, Kristina took a position with OEF International, and as a project manager in the Africa Department, made several trips to Somalia in support of programs to “uplift the status of women in Somalia.” Come hear her share her journey—from helping other women to raise their own self-awareness to becoming a successful entrepreneur herself.

If you have not yet attended a Glenfiddich Forum for Women session, we invite you to make your interest known by emailing us at feedback@mileslehane.com. In the subject field enter “Women’s Forum”. Just let us know that you would like to receive an invitation for the events through the year. Include your name, mailing address, e-mail address and day time phone number for our files.  Because our space is limited to 40 people, it is necessary to receive an RSVP from those coming. Contact information will be in the invitation.

Glenfiddich Forum for Women
RSVP by Wednesday October 10th (seating is limited – 40 maximum) to Melanie Miles (owner and principal) or Wendy at 703-777-3370, or email: feedback@mileslehane.com.

Summer Intern Provides Valuable Support

Each summer Melanie Miles tries to support the E.Y.E. (Educating Youth through Employment) program sponsored by the Northern Virginia Workforce Investment Board. This year we struck gold by finding a young college honors student to work with us for a month. Negar Mortazavi will be a junior at the University of Virginia, majoring in Foreign Affairs. A native of Persia, her family moved to the United States when Negar was about 7. Negar speaks 5 languages.

Usually our summer interns do chores that our normal busy schedule doesn’t provide time for–filing, sorting out our library, restacking the storage area. Negar did her share of those tasks, but from her first day with us, she was taking on substantive and important projects helping us develop elements of client programs. Her month with us provided mutual learning on all sides. She left us at the end of July and left the next day for a trip to Persia to visit members of her extended family.

Negar was honored by being selected as one of two “Intern of the Summer” awarded by the Board. Thanks, Negar. Come back and visit us again.

September 10 E-Breakfast to Focus on Understanding Long-Term Care

Cornerstone HR Consulting’s next Executive Breakfast presentation will focus on a much misunderstood product of the personal insurance industry–Long Term Care. Our presenter will be Chuck Redstone, Long-Term Care Regional Sales Director for New York Life Insurance. Chuck’s approach, which he believes to be the most important and therefore an eye-opener for us, is that long term care insurance is a family issue. Exactly like the beneficiary of a life insurance policy is the family, the beneficiary of a LTC policy is the family. This will not be a sales pitch. We promise that. You can leave your pens and checkbooks at home.

Insurance is a difficult subject for many of us to face for two main reasons: 1) We never like to think about negative, but inevitable health issues; 2) We find it difficult to admit our knowledge is not always up to date. All of us will face some medical event during our lives that may move us into the category of “uninsurable.” When that happens, we have to live with our past decisions! This brings to mind the saying, “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years before you need it.” In insurance as with trees, timing is everything! Chuck will talk about some interesting “hybrid” products that are new to the market.

Charles (Chuck) Redstone, LTCP, CLTC is responsible for sales and marketing for New York Life’s LTCi product for 10 of their General Offices. Last year, he was the number one Sales Director in the country. Chuck began his career in Long-Term Care in 1995 as an independent agent with Agent Development Incorporated (ADI).

We hope you will be able to join us on September 10th from 8 AM to 10 AM for networking, fellowship, refreshments, and an informative presentation by Chuck Redstone. Please RSVP to Miles LeHane Companies (703-777-3370).

A Dynamic Leader in Delivering HR and Training Solutions Joins Consulting Team

IRecently, Cornerstone formalized a consulting agreement with LaVeer Jovel, an instructor and facilitator of complex training programs who has been described as being energetic, innovative, knowledgeable and responsive. Former participants praise her for taking challenging topics and making them interactive, enlightening and fun. Her most recent corporate position was as a human resources manager for Smith’s Aerospace in Germantown, Maryland. Supporting LaVeer in this new endeavor is David Miles as they shape and promote the HR consulting and training services for Cornerstone.

LaVeer will be working with client stakeholders to determine the best course of action for an organization. She works with clients to clarify their needs, which may include:

  • Adapting off-the-shelf programs that align with the company’s strategic direction
  • Developing custom courseware for classroom delivery
  • Designing a blended solution using today’s technology
  • Delivering training and assessments (e.g., Myers Briggs, DiSC, 16PF)
  • Preparing programs for train-the-trainer sessions to enable delivery by the company’s own personnel

In her previous training activities, LaVeer has become very adept with the following subjects:

A significant factor in guaranteeing the success of LaVeer’s training programs is that from the beginning of her research to the day when a new program is premiered, her singular dedication is always on client service, support and satisfaction. Welcome aboard, LaVeer.
