SHRM
State Conference To Be Addressed
On
October 17, David Miles will address the 2003 Virginia State
SHRM conference with a presentation entitled: “What
is Your Career Intelligence Quotient?” Having worked
as an HR executive and now in his role as a career management
consultant, David will apply insight and real world experience
at the podium as he talks about individuals taking more
direct charge of their own careers.
One
key ingredient in this understanding is the concept of the
Employment Cycle and how it tracks the over-all economic
cycle. David will take the audience through the stages of
the employment cycle as they relate to the main economic
periods: Growth, Weakening, Onset of Recession, Recession,
Transition, and finally Recovery.
It
is how individuals react to these phases that will be examined
in depth. Using the research gathered during the preparation
of his doctoral dissertation, David will look at the four
key findings that were revealed as he spoke to senior executives
who had successfully passed through unplanned career transitions:
developing and following a personal and career strategic
plan; adhering to an active financial plan; maintaining
a balance to one’s life in and out of work; and being
resilient to the myriad of life’s unexpected changes.
The
bottom line of David’s message: We are in a new cycle
of change and it is not IF but WHEN the impact will be felt,
and therefore, each individual must become totally responsible
for his or her career management.

Computers Become Wireless … and Faster
When
the phone company finally brought T-1 technology to Historic
Leesburg, Miles LeHane decided the time was right to convert
its computers away from dial-up modems. Since the Stone
Age of computers, our business has been held back because
of an inadequate hook up to faster leading-edge technology.
Now it is here, and as this newsletter is being prepared,
there are technicians moving through the Glenfiddich House
making the modifications necessary to tie us into a T-1
line from Verizon. With so many phone lines already in place,
it has made sense to stay with that base technology instead
of going to another form.
A
major challenge has been overcome in the historic Glenfiddich
House, itself. Being a historically registered house with
heavy stonewalls in some difficult places, running new cables
to the interconnect box became an obstacle. This has been
solved by another investment in wireless technology. Each
workstation will be equipped with a transmitter, which will
communicate with one of several relays units located throughout
the house. From these units, cables snake down through the
walls to the source of the T-1 line in the basement.
In
addition to the high-speed interconnect, we have also changed
our long distance system. The first phone up and running
converts all outgoing calls to a digital transmission through
the Internet via portals on the T-1. This system by Norvergence
has allowed us to reduce costs by one-third, add T-1 speed
and provide our clients and participants with enhanced communications.
Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks!? Now
think what might have been had General Lee had all this
capability when he stayed in The Glenfiddich House.
Be

Exciting growth strategies are in the plans to enhance
our ability to serve your needs in this ever-changing
business environment. Be watching for details in the

Son Is Wed—Now Papa Can Relax…
Take
a good measure of sunshine and tropical breezes and mix
well with young love and you have the recipe for the wedding
of Michael Miles and Laura Egan onboard a Caribbean-bound
cruise ship. On Saturday, August 9, surrounded by 50 of
their closest family and friends, Mike and Laura exchanged
their self-written vows in a fittingly adorned lounge aboard
Royal Caribbean’s “Enchantment of the Seas.”
Five pink-dressed bride’s maids along with a like
number of sport shirted groomsmen surrounded the couple
as the trade winds kissed all in attendance and wished the
happy couple the best that life could offer. The wedding
party and most of the family and friends remained on board
for the 5-day cruise that stopped in Ocho Rios, Jamaica
and Grand Cayman (Georgetown).
Said
Papa David Miles, upon his return to the office, “I
am sleeping like a baby again for the first time is some
25 years. The second of our two sons is now married, and
I can relax. No longer am I the first line of contact for
problems. Now they can turn to their wives for solace and
support.”
Congratulations
to Mike and Laura who will be living in New Jersey as they
start their life together in a cottage in Avon by the Sea.

Doug
Price Travels Down Under
Many
of our readers will know about, and some are former participants
in, one of the many interesting and insightful sales training
presentations given by Doug Price, the president of Miles LeHane.
Several times a year, Doug conducts two-day workshops for
convention and visitors bureaus’ staff on the subject
of selling destinations in very competitive markets. The sponsoring
organization, International Association of Convention and
Visitors Bureaus, asked Doug to travel to Australia to present
his two workshops for the staffs of the Australian bureaus.
During
the annual conference, Doug took the stage on August 2-4 to
deliver two very well received workshops. Based on his book,
License to Sell, Doug shared with the local attendees many
of the challenges and solutions that U.S. destination sales
professionals contend with every day.
As
a seasoned sales trainer and traveler, Doug has always been
willing to take the show on the road. He describes the opportunity
to present in Australia as “Priceless!!”
Miles
Addresses the World
David
Miles was the guest presenter on a live Web Seminar on July
17. Networked all over the US and into Europe to several hundred
subscribers, David spoke on “Career Management–Be
Prepared for the Unexpected.” Hosted by Financial Executives
International and Lincolnshire Partners, David addressed the
end of “life-long” employment and the new reality
of “at will” employment as it applied to personal
career management. The presentation was based on the findings
from David’s doctoral dissertation, and was keyed to
the common traits for the successful career transitions identified
in his research: a) personal career strategic plan; b) active
financial plan; c) life balance in and out of work; and d)
resilience in change.

DC
Office Relocates
Effective
on July 1st, the Miles LeHane office in Washington,
DC, opened its doors at a new address. For the past
two years, Scott Miles has directed Washington operations
from a suite in the Ronald Reagan Building. Now when
he goes to work he enters a larger office over on
Connecticut Avenue, using some of the space not utilized
by the Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Bureau’s
DC office.
“Washington
is an expensive city,” Scott agrees, “and
the Reagan Building was certainly in the high rent
district. Being just off M Street now gives our clients
much easier access to our consultants and programs
as well as two nearby Metro stops.”
All
the services that are available to program participants
in any of Miles LeHane’s other four office
locations are also available in the new Washington
office. The address is 1025 Connecticut Avenue, NW,
Suite 907, Washington, DC 20036.
The
phone number is 202-882-0194, or through our principal
office in Leesburg, Virginia, at 703-777-3370.
