Miles LeHane
Refocuses Traditional Business Thrusts: New Products and
Services Available Online
Many
events have occurred in the world economy over the past
few years. The adage “business as usual” rarely
seems to apply any longer. Miles LeHane has seen the shift
significantly affect the way and the extent to which businesses
are using our core career management and human resources
services. We are reacting and changing—or rather,
adding products and services to our menu that will enable
our client companies—present, past and future—to
do more with less.
One
very important addition is our redoubled emphasis on products.
Traditionally a business built around consultative services,
we have seen and felt the shrinking budgets with many of
the organizations we’ve helped in the past. The needs
have not diminished—in fact they have probably increased,
particularly in the area of outplacement. But the budgets
to cover such services are harder to come by to keep up
with the growing pressures for prioritizing the selection
of services. We are developing new ways to take our services
to market by using the Internet. We will keep you posted
as this is brought to fruition in the near future.
For our products area, we have
launched a strong initiative, putting in place a full time
specialist to market and deliver products that are available
from Miles LeHane online—products that do not require
consultative services to implement or interpret.
Our
new specialist for online product sales is Mike Miles. Certainly
no stranger to our business, Mike is tasked with introducing
our first two online products as vehicles for our human
resources clients to blunt major potential legal problems.
One new online program, entitled Preventing
Sexual Harassment, is a 13-minute awareness training
program that, when completed by all employees (including
management), will document to the EEOC that requirements
for training in this area have been met. This simple awareness
training could prevent multi-million dollar liability lawsuits
against the harasser, supervisors and the organization.
The
second online product is Prevention
of Workplace Violence. Violence in the workplace is
the third leading cause of occupational death and the fastest
growing type of homicide in the U.S., claiming between 850
and 1000 lives each year. Cost of workplace violence is
in excess of $4 Billion per year when including property
damage, lost productivity, lost sales and negligence lawsuits.
Employers can be held liable for workplace violence when
negligence in several areas can be proven.
This
14-minute online training module can become the basis for
wide-spread employee awareness and offer documentation to
head off liability suits.
Both
of these products are very inexpensive, less than $25 for
each employee trained, especially when weighted against
the potential of millions of dollars in costs associated
with proven liability.
Women’s
Forum Provides Networking Channel
The
second major new feature of our revamped web site is the
Women’s Forum—an
extension of Miles LeHane’s web information that continues
our effort to help women executives resolve career issues
and help build bridges for their career journeys. This page
is a logical offshoot of our new seminar series entitled,
“Women Executives: Building Influence and Networks.”
The first seminar, held on June 13 and attended by over
40 women executives from across the Washington Metropolitan
Area and Pennsylvania representing almost as many different
businesses, explored themes of women executives, including
leadership competence, connecting, career development, and
building influence and networks. Our intent for this series
is very straightforward:
-
To
create an environment that promotes learning that will
enhance the Executive Woman’s ability to influence
and lead.
-
To
provide a place where strong professional connections
can begin and grow as women come together to share their
business experiences.
The
Women’s Forum page enables the active participants
to stay networked through shared articles of interest, announcements
of upcoming events, and for registered members, access to
a real time chat room to post and discuss questions or concerns
with like-minded women executives. Visit the Miles LeHane
website and learn more about this new women’s program.

Rockville
Becomes Latest Office Location
Our newest office in Rockville, Maryland will have its Grand
Opening on Thursday, November 7, 2002
from 8—11AM.
Miles LeHane
continues to offer its constituent clients outstanding career
management services and products. As well as the program
content, it is the accessibility of these services that
becomes very important. In that regard, the newest office
for Miles LeHane has been operating since mid summer in
Rockville, Maryland—less than an hour from the heart
of Washington, DC, but squarely in the midst of the burgeoning
business community of Montgomery County.
This
office is managed by John Gregg, one of Miles LeHane’s
highly experienced counselors, and offers the full range
of services available at all MLG locations. Rockville compliments
the office in Frederick, Maryland that had its grand opening
in the spring, expanding our service availability to most
of the business community located north and west of Washington,
DC.
MLG
Announces Four New Affiliate Locations
Rockville
and Frederick are our newest staffed offices. With growth
very much a main focus for Miles LeHane, we have continued
to reach outward to determine the best ways to put our products
and services in closer proximity to our clientele. To further
our competitive edge in today’s marketplace, and in
order to provide that high level of customer service to
the marketplace, we have established affiliate offices in
four more locations:
-
Baltimore/Hunt
Valley, MD
-
Annapolis,
MD
-
Columbia,
MD (coming soon)
-
Fairfax,
VA
This
brings to nine, the number of Miles LeHane offices ready
to help you.

Enhanced
Website Offers Easier Access to Online Services
Practically
all businesses dealing with services have websites. Miles LeHane
is no exception. For several years we’ve had a site.
With the click of a mouse, our visitors have been able to
learn about Miles LeHane—the company and our core services.
Well, all that is still there but has now been completely
reorganized and guided by a new navigation system that makes
getting around so much easier. Information about the company
and our philosophy is still there, as are all the core programs.
But we have recently added two very significant features to
the site making it not only informative, but interactive as
well.
When you visit the site and click “Online
Services” you will first see several programs that
we’ve had for quite a while: Employment Talk, that helps
organize and build a solid career campaign; and Career Search,
that provides comprehensive information on over 1.7 million
potential employers in the United States and Canada. These
have been part of our core career transition services and
will continue to be so.
We continue to offer
the Personal Profile System, better known as DiSC, that helps
us understand why we act as we do and how other people see
us. With increasing frequency, this program is being administered,
not as core assessment service, but as a stand-alone product
offering that can be used singly or for a group, and with
the printed report used for all interpretation or with additional
consultative services.
Other new products will be introduced during the next year
as we refine their positioning in our mix of offerings. Each
will be a stand-alone module that can be used by client companies
to augment or replace some of the consultative services available
from Miles LeHane, as the economy continues to find its new
level.
Presenting
Dr. David C. Miles, Ed. D (Doctor for Education HR)
In the past few
issues of this newsletter, we have made mention of David Miles’
doctoral dissertation nearing completion. Well folks, on August
27th, David successfully defended his work and brought to
conclusion a 12-year undertaking. David and his family are
very pleased and proud.
This achievement
has implications for David’s business and constituents,
as well. Entitled, “How Successful Executives Respond:
A Phenomenological Study of Unplanned Career Transition,”
this work sheds first light upon those few highly successful
executives for whom unplanned termination was not received
as the dark trauma it usually is. Analyses from the 15 interviews
suggest that the phenomena that enable a swift passage into
a next phase following the termination are either resident
within the successful executive or teachable at some level.
See chart of The Employment
Cycle.
The dissertation
has gone for copyright and into the Library of Congress catalog,
as well as into production for a number of bound copies. Further,
David would be pleased to speak before your group offering
the highlights of his findings. Already several SHRM chapters
have benefited from his research. Are you interested? Give
Dr. David a call.
